Artist's Comments

This is my entry for the March 2003 MAG-DX. It took a LOT longer than I thought it would. One reason is because the file was so huge that it took my computer forever to do anything. It also took me a while to get the look of it satisfactory. I very much doubt I'll win anything with this, but I like it. Actually, I'm pretty proud of the way it came out. Kinda art nouveau but not really, ya know?

Since the character is a priestess, I decided to do something of her summoning her god. (Check out the contest page for details.) It turned out much more symbolic than literal. But I like that. For the summoning chant, which I totally made up, I went all Tolkien on its ass. I used a Tengwar Quenya font. Used straight English, though. No translation. Had too much trouble getting one. But you really can't tell, anyway. For those interested, here's the full chant, which really sucks IMO:

Oh great god of fire, he who warms us when all is bleak and cold. You are the essence of life, the fire of being. Death and rebirth. You die and are born anew each day with the rising and setting of the sun. We owe our souls to you, god of flames and of passion and of life, o beautiful and terrible spirit. I summon you now to my aide.

I also used a Tolkien font for my signature. Not sure what inspired me to do this other than the fact that she's an elf. Probably has something to do with my research paper...

Wow... She is beautiful. I love her serene expression and the way her hair flows. The colours are softer than I normally would think, when I imagine fire, but I like it this way. She seems peaceful and contemplative, instead of wrathful and angry. The background is very nice, too. I love how it just breaks down as it goes higher. Again, nice job.

Nice work... the colors have something 'autumnal' to the. The 'circle' behind ehr head looks a little odd though, maybe a true circle would do better?

Very nice, I like your color choise and how the whole image is in movement. The sligthly chaotic background works well with her powerfull hair. Good work ;) (Wink)

She looks so peaceful.. and the color scheme looks all.. warm and comfortable. The way the hair flows is also just.. lovely.

damn...that's beautiful. I love the softness of this as well as the hair. the hair is very well done and looks very natural.

Wow, this is beautiful.. The motion you've captured is just lovely, and I love the color scheme you've got going here. I almost wish that she went right off of the bottom of the page, instead of cutting off like that, but it still looks good that way.

Hug Very nice work, and good luck in the contest. +fav

this is awesome. I love this. I love the way that you can tell she's summoning. Her hair is beautiful and the way the background breaks at the top is totally wicked. Everything is so soft in this, and it looks very very professional. Hell, if you don't win, I wanna see who does!! :D (Big Grin) :D (Big Grin)

I love the summon too, I don't think its really sucky. :P (Lick) I like it. But the rest of the peice is just...wow. How everything fits together. Nothing looks out of place. n_n Awesome work, and good luck.

this is so adorable and gorgeous. Your art style is very cute. I love her pose in this. The expression is sweet. It looks like she is about to kiss someone LOL I love the way you made her hair flowing. You put a lot of detail in it and it just looks gorgeous. Your choice of color is excellent. It really adds to the mood of the pic. So soft and vibrant. The background is also nicely done and goes very well with the rest of the pic. Love the colors, Love the text. Great work!

For the record, I tried as hard as I could to make that a perfect circle, but I did all the inking by hand without the aid of a compass. I fixed it up as best I could, but I didn't want to do a major overhaul on it, considering how much hair I have flying around there. And in case anyone is curious, I created the background by making my own feather image nozzle in Painter 7. It took a little while to get right, but the effect is well worth it. Anyway, I'm glad so many people are pleased with my work. Yay!

And I can't say for certain, but I'm betting that Space Coyote's entry is going to win the art category. Just a gut feeling.
